Sip Trunking vs PRI – Differences

Before discussing sip trunking vs PRI, we must understand that SIP trunking uses VoIP while PRI is for traditional PSTN.  PRI lines were introduced after analog lines. With PRI, one can make multiple calls, as a contrast to the analog line. With SIP trunking virtually there is no limit. The limit depends on the internet connection speed.

What are the key points in SIP trunking Vs PRI?

  1. SIP trunking uses the SIP signaling protocol, while PRI other protocol for voice circuit setup.
  2. For a single line PRI, the number of concurrent calls are limited. While with VoIP the concurrent calls are not limited.
  3. In SIP trunking, the PBX should be an IP PBX.  While in PRI,  traditional PBX works.
  4. PRI does not need any internet connection to work. SIP trunking requires a high-speed internet connection.
  5. In PRI, upgradation to more capacity requires, more lines, while in SIP trunking no need for additional lines.
  6. Call quality is guaranteed in PRI. Quality of call in SIP Trunking depends on internet speed.
  7. PRI uses circuit switching, while SIP trunking uses packet switching.
  8. Initial setup cost is more in PRI, as additional lines need to set up between the public switching center and PBX.  SIP trunking uses an existing internet connection, no need for any physical line.
  9. Failover in SIP trunking is quick. I just need to switch the VoIP server. In PRI its not easy as the physical line needs to sift to new public switch center.

Conclusion for sip trunking vs PRI:

Both provide the solution for bulk calling.  But Sip trunking is more suitable for the business, where initially a low capacity is required and later it can expand. But if one needs to assure the quality of service, then PRI is a better option.
